Melting the ‘Fuzz’

One of the most instinctive things we do in the morning when we wake, is to lengthen and stretch our bodies. It just feels good! Ever wonder why? In the words and research of Dr. Gil Hedley, we are literally melting the ‘fuzz’ that has accumulated during our night of sleep. This melting action provides us with a feeling of looseness, release, and fluidity as the structures beneath our skin move more freely.

To get a bit technical, the muscles and organs throughout our body are encased and separated by a thin sheet of connective tissue called fascia. Fascia is a layer of tissue that holds everything together and in its place beneath the skin. Overnight when we sleep, or every day when sitting at a desk in a fixed position for a long period of time, the fuzz, which is essentially thin, hair like connective tissue, accumulates between the layers of fascia throughout our body. Over time (days, months, years), the fuzz, if not dealt with, thickens significantly, layer upon layer, solidifying surfaces or joints or other musculoskeletal structures which can cause negative physical effects and is a major contributor to poor posture. A good example of this is when two muscles that normally slide freely next to each other have become fused with dense fuzz, limiting range of motion, causing stiffness and possibly pain, and overall leaving a person less functional.

Removing fuzz from your body also adds great benefit to corrective chiropractic. When fuzz is freed it allows for greater ease with spinal adjustments, greater mobility with corrective exercises, and longer lasting change.

We all have fuzz accumulating throughout our bodies from months or years of habitual behavior or lack of a movement practice. But the great thing is, you can take control of this natural cycle of the body. Don’t let today’s fuzz accumulate into tomorrow. Stretch and move your body more dynamically in daily life.
